Melody School, Chimaltenango

“My Melody School” opened in 2003, in the remote indigenous  town of Chimaltenango, Guatemala, with just five students in a single inauspicious one-room building.

The director of the school rode his bike to the markets and knocked on doors to deliver the message of hope through education. With many families living in extreme poverty, the parents are focused on survival, not education, and children as young as three contribute to the family income by selling products such as avocados in the local market or on the streets.  As sponsors came on board to support individual students or the school in general, the school has grown to 95 students from kindergarten to grade 10 and this year the first students completed high school, a huge step towards breaking the cycle of poverty for them and their families!
