The Gambia 2024: Specialized Care, Life-Changing Impact

From April 24 to May 3, 2024, Medicos en Accion returned to Kanifing General Hospital to provide highly specialized thyroid surgery for patients with large, complex goitres. This type of care is rarely available in the region. Over nine surgical days, the team completed 21 procedures, supported by the National Thyroid Clinic established in 2015 and the dedicated leadership of local physicians.

This mission was defined not only by surgical outcomes, but also by powerful patient stories, including Aminata’s. Her experience reflects the profound physical, emotional, and social impact of access to care, as well as the lasting relationships built with patients whose lives have been changed over more than a decade.
